A FIRST CENTURY BOAT ON DISPLAY AT KIBBUTZ GINOSAR

This was the remains of a first century A.D. Galilee boat about 27 feet long

The boat was found in a mud flat during a drought.  After the vessel boards were found in a rotted condition; the boat was gently encased in some type of foam, floated to shore, and then later injected with some sort of plastic or wax for preservation.  It is currently on display at Kibbutz Ginosar and there is a movie describing the find and its significance in the museum.  Naval archeologist Shelly Wachsmann wrote a book about finding it called: "The Sea of Galilee Boat -- An Extraordinary 2,000 Year Old Discovery," published by Plenum Press.  Some nicknamed the boat, "The Jesus Boat" as it was from a time close to the time of Christ's ministry in Galilee.  The boat may have been propelled by a main sail and six oarsmen.

These artifacts on display at the Ginosar museum were first century artifacts found in and near the boat used in addition to C14 dating to date the shipwreck.

I was at the Capernaum gift booth and picked up a picture of the mosaic with boat displayed and asked the vendor where the mosaic was.  He directed me to a nearby display of columns where the restored mosaic was.  It is a two-masts, six oared boat recorded on a circa first century A.D. mosaic from Magdala.
