PETER'S VISION AT JOPPA
Acts 10:
American Standard Version
9 Now on
the morrow, as they were on their journey, and drew nigh unto the city, Peter
went up upon the housetop to pray, about the sixth hour:
10 and he became hungry, and
desired to eat: but while they made ready, he fell into a trance;
11 and he beholdeth the
heaven opened, and a certain vessel descending, as it were a great sheet, let
down by four corners upon the earth:
12 wherein were all manner
of fourfooted beasts and creeping things of the earth and birds of the heaven.
13 And there came a voice to
him, Rise, Peter; kill and eat.
14 But Peter said, Not so,
Lord; for I have never eaten anything that is common and unclean.
15 And a voice came unto him
again the second time, What God hath cleansed, make not thou common.
16 And this was done thrice:
and straightway the vessel was received up into heaven.
The good lord revealed to Peter that he might eat any type of animal. This was good for Peter to know as he was being sent to preach to a Gentile household where any type of food might be served. The Jews had Kosher dietary laws from the Book of Deuteronomy that forbade the eating of pork, camel meat, rabbits, squid, oysters, shrimp, and other seafood that did not grow fish scales. While not eating uncooked pork may have prevented intestinal parasite, these Kosher dietary laws were generally superstitious. Louis Pasteur showed heating foods killed bacteria. Heating milk (pasteurization) kills bacteria to prevent spoilage. The Romans had cooking pots of ceramic/clay and metal fabrication. They cooked their meat before eating it. Cooking pots found in ancient ruins are evidence of preference for cooked food. Cooking killed germs and also killed parasite eggs that were in the flesh of some animals.
Modern farming practice has eliminated intestinal parasites from farm animals. Putting medicine in the animals' drinking water prevents parasite infestations.

Fishermen unload their catch onto the dock at Joppa/Yafo.

The catch includes fish, squid, and crabs. The squid and
crabs are not eaten by observant Jews to this day. God made these things
clean in his vision to Peter. The ocean harvest was made
bountiful. Truth and righteousness have greatly
reduced disease from contaminated food and have overtaken the efforts of the
ancients to prevent food contamination.
